I obtained my residency through the Skilled Migrant Category. Criteria is somewhat similar to the present Expression of interest (EOI). It is also a points system and the passing mark is 25, I was 20, short of 5 points but that is acceptable. Under the previous law shortage of five points can be considered by issuing the applicant with a temporary 6 months work permit to find a job offer (5 points) to complete the required passing mark of 25.
Finally I have a work permit finding job is easy……you wish. I have exhausted the five months applying for jobs related to my qualifications and experience, a Executive Secretary and a Business graduate. No one would like to hire a new migrant to a front line position without a New Zealand experience. But how can I have a NZ experience if they wouldn’t hire me? it doesn’t make sense to me. I engaged the services of an Immigration adviser who is totally clueless on what to do. With the reasoning that it is not their job to to do job search for me. They have done all the filing works and all the communications to Immigration that’s just it end of the story. I was desperate and angry with only one month left I am to go back home or will be on the run.
As always when you are at your wits’ end, divine intervention enters. Out of the blue I met an Immigration adviser who is doing a job search for a fee, 10% of your annual salary. I am ready to bite the trap but she casually asked why can’t I find work since my application is still under the previous law. That my job offer need not be related to my qualifications. Bingo! my Immigration adviser didn’t even know that. The job that qualifies me then is a Check out Operator post (a cashier in a Supermarket). And because I stood out among the young and inexperienced high school graduates with NZ experience, I soon become a supervisor and later promoted to be an Administrative Assistant of the company Director.
The whole hullabaloo can be avoided if and again I am equipped and ready. As promised I will feed you with some helpful informations on the Skilled Migrant's initial requirements. Now the system is in place and qualified Professionals can do it online or paper application. Online applications are cheaper than using the printed form. The paper EOI costs NZ$560 and the online version costs NZ$440.00. It pays to study and know all your options.
